Wickford in Bloom were having a lot of success in the High Street and were now looking for another local project. The Cemetery Garden had been an attractive place but due to cutbacks, had become overgrown & neglected, The Cemetery Team were approached and welcomed our offer of help, with open arms. Our first action was to clear the 10 Planters of weeds, add fertiliser and re-stock with a colourful range of Bedding plants. The effect was instant and appreciated by all who visited the Cemetery.
Spurred on by this success the Volunteer group went on to clear existing Beds of weeds ready for some new planting in 2025.
If you want to be part of our friendly team and help with our New Exciting Plans, please get in touch {See below} We would love to see you.
We currently have a small enthusiastic volunteer group of around a dozen people, led by Robin Sparks, most of whom have relatives in the cemetery and are all keen to see the garden restored.
We meet at 10.00am every Sunday morning, from April to October, for a couple of hours and keep in touch via a WhatsApp group where the jobs for that Sunday are posted.
Working in partnership with Matthew Selway, the Cemetery Groundsman, who also volunteers, we have been able to undertake most restoration jobs with the aim of creating a low maintenance garden full of shrubs and perennials, with summer bedding and spring bulbs in the 10 concrete planters lining the lime grove approach road.
A satisfying aspect of our group is that everyone is involved in the planning so we can achieve a garden that we and the community can be proud of.
During last year we have been able to introduce Tea & Coffee making facilities to enjoy a more social occasion. We also have access to the Waiting Room where the volunteers have restored the toilets and seating area.
